  • First Contact Physio's at Glasgow CWG 2014

This picture taken at the ACPSEM Manchester Studay day with some of the First Contact Physio's from Glasgow CWG 2014. In the picture are Asif Din. Lisa Connell and Hasina Patel are kneeling on the floor. Also in the picture are Beamish Patel, Liz Nicholls and Liz Mendl Head of Medical Servcies for Glasgow 2014 and Life memeber of the ACPSEM.

Asif, Lisa and Hasina were 1st Contact Physio's (Beamish is a more senior Physio who supported some of our First Contact Physio's on venue).

The idea with the role was to offer opportunities within elite sport to newly or recently qualified Physio's. Their scope of practice was limited to initial basic assessment, PRICE management and basic guidance. They were encourage not to engage in detailed analysis, rehabilitation plans or soft tissue management. However, they were able to follow their athlete's cases up with the Physio's and Sports Medicine teams in the Village Polyclinic.

In some venues, we had more senior Physiotherapists (for example Beamish) supporting a group of First Contact Physio's. This worked extremely well, rather like a clinical placement model, with excellent feedback from the teams and our volunteers alike.

This is a great opporuntity for physio to gain experience of elite sport but in a supported environment. It would be great to hear from ACPSEM members about their experiences of Glasgow 2014 and any pictures. Please email them into us or use our social networks to get in touch!
